Learn How to Ski or Snowboard – Tips for Beginners [Contest]

Ski Lesson at Big White Ski Resort

Photo credit: Big White Ski Resort

Downhill skiing and snowboarding is thrilling adventure. You can whisk downhill, carving up the snow, dash in-and-out of the trees, fly over jumps, and sink waist deep into powder snow. If you’ve never tried downhill skiing, or it’s been a few years since you’ve been on skis or a snowboard, here are some tips on what you need to know:

  1. Instead of purchasing new skis, boots, poles, and other ski gear, plan on renting. You’ll want to try out the sport to make sure you enjoy it before you lay down the cash to own your own. This way, if you decide it’s not for you, you haven’t laid down a huge financial commitment.
  2. Register for a beginner lesson. Most ski areas and resorts offer a learn to ski program taught by certified instructors. In a two-hour ski or snowboard lesson you’ll learn the basics of how to go down hill, turn, and stop. This short lesson will take the frustration out of learning on your own or from a friend and allow you to enjoy the rest of the day out on the mountain exploring the green runs.
  3. Dress warm and in layers. Mornings can be cool on the mountain so you’ll want to dress warm, but as the afternoon sun comes out, you’ll warm up and want to shed a layer or two. Wear a toque, gloves or mitts, a scarf, warm jacket, turtle neck, base layer, long johns, snow pants and warm socks. Stay away from cotton because it absorbs moisture and doesn’t breath. Do not wear jeans because they don’t allow flexibility into your legs, which will be working the entire way down the hill. If it’s sunny or foggy, wear goggles or polarized sunglasses.
  4. Learn with a friend. Learning to ski or snowboard with a friend is more enjoyable, especially when the lesson is over and you can spend the rest of the day on the mountain. Take photos of each other learning to ski/snowboard and at safe stopping points on the mountain such at the top of the chairlift, the village centre or at the run signs.
  5. Stick to beginner runs. Beginner runs are commonly marked with green circles on mountain maps. Green runs are the easiest runs; they are wide and gentle. Experienced skiers and snowboarders know to watch out for beginners and will leave plenty of space. Blue runs are more challenging; they aren’t as wide and often have rolling hills, bumps, and more trees. Black and double-black diamond runs are the steepest runs and are very narrow. These are for experienced skiers and snowboarders who know how to navigate difficult terrain.
  6. Make a weekend out of it. Going for a ski weekend is a lot of fun. After a morning of lessons and a day on the mountain enjoying a number of runs, you can sit back and relax on a patio for après ski (drinks), followed by dinner at an on-mountain restaurant, and a hot tub to relax your aching muscles.

It’s that easy! Following these simple tips will help make your first time fun and gear you into a life-long skier or snowboarder.

Big White Ski Resort, located 56km (35mi), south east of Kelowna, BC, in the Thompson Okanagan. It’s a great resort to learn how to ski and snowboard. There are lots of affordable accommodation choices, fantastic spring skiing conditions, certified instructors, and have a wide-range of dining options. Central Reservations has spring skiing packages that include free lift tickets and ski-in/ski-out accommodations starting at $51 per person – call 1-800-663-2772 for details.

Something Fishy Going on at Provence Restaurants in Vancouver

Photo contributed

Yes, the rumours are true. The two Provence French bistro restaurants are celebrating Vancouver’s love of seafood during the month of April with their Poisson d’Avril menu.

For $45, meal choices range from seared albacore tuna, wild Pacific salmon, grilled halibut, or poached ruby red trout, to name just a few of the selections. Each entre also includes dessert.

“As an inaugural member of Ocean Wise, we serve only fish that has been harvested in a sustainable and responsible manner. That still gives us plenty of choice,” states Provence’s Executive Chef and Owner, Jean-Francis Quaglia. “Poisson d’Avril is an opportunity to welcome spring with a bit of fun. This is our fifth year doing it and everyone gets in on the fun – including some of the staff and their children who have created the whimsical fish that adorn the restaurant and menus.”

The French restaurant is also enjoying a bit of old-work practical jokes during the month of April. In France, friends or family carefully place paper cut-out fish on the backs of unsuspecting people, until someone shouts ‘Poisson d’Avril!’.

During the month of April, both Provence locations will be randomly placing paper fish under plates or even on patron’s backs. Lucky winners will find prizes ranging from complimentary appetizers, meal discounts, gift certificates, or a copy of Chef Jean-Francis and Alessandra Quaglia book, New World Provence.

Joe Boxer Modern Fit Stretch [Contest]

Joe Boxer Modern Fit Stretch Underwear

You could win 2 pairs of Joe Boxer Modern Fit Stretch underwear. Contest details below.

It feels good to put on a good, comfortable fitting, no-nonsense pair of underwear. A pair of underwear that you know will be comfortable all day long while you go about your business. That underwear is the new Modern Fit Stretch low-rise trunks by Joe Boxer.

The Modern Fit Stretch are a tight-fit trunk that are fitted. This means everything will be kept nice and snug. They are made from 95% cotton and 5% spandex materials, making them soft and comfortable – the way you want underwear to be. They are available in either solid grey or solid black so there’s no hassle in the morning trying to decide what colour to wear – just grab a pair and go.

Cotton underwear, like the Modern Fit Stretch, are perfect for days at the office, a night out for dinner and movies, or wearing in bed. Cotton breathes, keeping you cool. Oh, and guys, cotton is not ideal for activities like the gym because cotton absorbs moisture and causes irritation – so put these on after your shower at the gym!

The 1.25” waistband has the prominently displayed Joe Boxer embroidered logo repeating all the way around. The waistband is double-stitched, reducing the risk of being torn from the material – something more men need to pay attention to.

The legs are sewn with a double layer, creating a cuff, which has also been double-stitched. This keeps them in place and reacting with your every move.

These cotton underwear are super easy to take care of too (another great advantage of cotton). Most guys don’t want to fuss around with hand washing and air-drying expensive underwear. Joe Boxer’s Modern Fit Stretch can be washed with all your other dark clothes in cold water and tumbled dry. Easy, right?

Joe Boxer Modern Fit Stretch are available in Canada at The Bay, Sears and independent menswear and sporting retailers. The 2-pair pack are $32.00 CDN – amazing value!

Stay up-to-date with Joe Boxer by following them on Facebook.

Celebrities Set to Re-Open after Major Renovation [Contest]

LiberaceAfter two months of an extensive renovation including lighting, sound and aesthetics, Vancouver’s landmark, Celebrities Night Club (1022 Davie Street), will re-open its doors on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

The re-launch has generated a lot of conversation amongst Vancouver’s gay community. The nightclub has consistently been ranked as one of the largest gay night clubs in western Canada; however, the announcement of the renovations was vague in clarifying if the club would remain focused on the LGBT community, or if it would shift gears to attract a broader audience.

The reveal of the renovations have been closely guarded secret. Tuesday nights will remain open to all demographics, but most of the other nights are still under wraps.

Part of the mystery has been answered with the announcement of ICON. Produced by TFD Presents, ICON was launched last fall with much fanfare and enthusiasm from the Vancouver gay community. The event brought big name talent to the city including Manila Luzon, JuJuBee and Dominic Pacifico.

Throughout the month of March, Celebrities Nightclub and TFD Presents will host LIBERACE Thursday’s. Starting March 7, the doors will open at 10pm to a new night of fun and excitement to the remodeled nightclub.

The Thursday March 7 event will feature music by DJ Del Stamp and performances by local gay singer, dancer, and actor, Tyrell Witherspoon. Cover is $5 and highballs will be on spcial for $4.50.

Horse Whisperer [Contest]

Alberta Premium Dark HorseIn less than a year, Canadians have shown a renewed interest in Canadian whisky. It’s pretty easy to see why – there have been great strides by the distilleries to produce premium whisky products at prices consumers can afford. One of the latest to hit store shelves is Alberta Premium Dark Horse.

It’s time to forget about the days of your grandparents rye-whiskies that burned and left a bitter after-taste. The new Dark Horse is refined with flavours of vanilla, smoke, sweet oak and savoury dried fruit including plum and dried currant.

Dark Horse is made in Canada, for Canada, and with 100% Canadian prairie rye grain. It is blended at a 45% strength in small batches after aging in handpicked, heavily charred white oak barrels. The rich, almost burgundy colour shimmers through the classic burboun style bottle.

“Alberta Premium Dark Horse is one of the richest tasting Canadian whiskies with some of the highest barrel ageing extractives available on shelf,” says Dan Tullio, Canadian Whisky Master Ambassador, Beam Canada Inc. “Tasting Dark Horse, you experience a horseshoe-shaped pattern on the tongue with tanginess and spice on the sides and sweetness on the tip, with a deliciously smooth, long finish.

Alberta Premium Dark Horse 750ml bottles is a new permanent listing on whisky shelves across Canada: Alberta ($28.99)British Columbia ($28.99), Manitoba ($29.99), Nova Scotia ($29.99), New Brunswick ($29.99), Ontario ($29.95), and Saskatchewan ($31.95).

The Horse Whisperer:

  • 1 oz Alberta Premium Dark Horse
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • 2 oz ginger ale

Measure ingredients into a small rocks glass with a whisky stone. Garnish with a fresh orange slice.

Unstuck – The Question of Monogamy [Contest]

Unstuck photoThe question on monogamy comes up in almost every relationship at one time or another. For some, it’s a sensitive topic, for others, it’s not a big deal. For Matt and Tim, a gay-couple that have been together for 10 years, it turns their cozy home into a battlefield. Their story is told in the live-theatre performance, Unstuck, coming to Vancouver March 16-23, 2013.

The show is based upon the characters, Tim and Matt, who have enjoyed a wonderful monogamous relationship. Like most gay-couples, the question of an open relationship has come up, through the proverbial knock at the door. The unexpected guest for the couple to quickly re-evaluate their relationship and explore their options.

“The impetus for the play was a conversation I had with my boyfriend many years back about monogamy,” explained the Toronto playwrite, Evan Tsitsias. “I feel that at every one of us at some point in our lives and relationships have to discuss or contemplate this decision and what it means inside our relationship.”

Evan hopes this performance will provoke people to take a hard look at their own perspective of the themes from the show, and to see if they can separate sex from love, and what it means to them, and their relationship.

Produced by Screaming Weenie Productions, the show is directed by Michael Dobbin. The performance is guaranteed to bring the conversation of open relationships to the forefront of conversation. The cast for the Vancouver performance includes local actors, Sean Harris Oliver, Ari Solomon, and Kevin Kraussier.

Spring is in the Air at VanDusen Botanical Gardens [Contest]

VanDusen_LogoWhile we may be tired of what feels like non-stop rain in Vancouver, in a few more weeks it’ll be spring. Many people believe gardens are only beautiful from late spring through the summer, but at VanDusen Botanical Gardens, the plants and foliage thrive year-round, and there are surprises around every corner.

May birds call VanDusen Botanical Gardens Home During the Winter Months

Photos used with permission from VanDusen Botanical Garden

The west coast receives an intense amount of rain during the winter months, but despite the heavy precipitation, life continues to thrive at the VanDusen Botanical Gardens. Broadleaf evergreen shrubs are full of life, and an assortment of winter berries provide bursts of vibrant colours against the cool, grey skies. The park is also home to a variety of birds during the winter months.

The Snowdrops are now out at VanDusen Botanical Garden

Don’t be fooled thinking the garden isn’t very exciting right now. If you take a closer look, you’ll see the classic telltale signs of spring beginning to make their appearance. During the transition from winter to spring, pastel coloured crocuses and snowdrops appear under the trees and shrubs. As the days get longer and the warmer, sunnier days return, daffodils, tulips and narcissus come out.

The Real McCoy [Contest]

Canadian Club Whisky and Soda

Canadian Club whisky and soda is a classic Canadian cocktail, going back before the Prohibition era in the United States.

Having been around for over 150 years, the Canadian distillery and whisky maker, Canadian Club, has played an important part in North American history. Not only has whisky been a staple in liquor cabinets for generations and been the basis of many classic cocktails, but Canadian Club is said to have a dark history during the American prohibition era.

Through the roaring 20’s and into the depression, the United States government believed a more orderly society with less crime could be achieved through the ban of making, transporting, and sale of liquor. Lasting from 1920 right through 1933, the Prohibition era was not popular with most Americans, especially amongst law-abiding citizens who considered the law unfair.

While some people ventured down the path of fashioning homemade stills, often with poor results. At the time of the American prohibition, liquor making and sales was completely legal. In the beginning, adventure-seekers near the Canada-US boarder began a profitable business bootlegging.

It wasn’t long until the mafia got involved. Located just across the boarder from Detroit was the Canadian Club distillery, which quickly became a favourite supplier of Chicago’s most notorious ganger’s, Al Capone.

An estimated 20,000 cases of Canadian Club Whisky were smuggled into the United Sates every month throughout the Prohibition ear. A $7 case of whisky easily translated into 10 times the price once sold on the black market.

When the Prohibition era came to an end in 1933, the liquor industry in the United States returned. In Canada, Canadian Club continued to produce top quality whisky. Now in business for over 150 years, Canadian Club has become on of Canada’s flagship brands, recognized and respected around the world.

Take a step back in time to the Prohibition era with a Real McCoy, a simple cocktail that adds a punch of fizz without covering up the flavour of the whisky.

  • 1.5 oz Canadian Club 12 Year Old Whisky
  • 2 oz Club Soda

Fill an Old Fashioned glass with fresh, clean ice. Pour in whisky and top with club soda. Stir. Garnish with maraschino cherries.

Truffles Café Goes Trendy with New Charcuterie Platter [Contest]

Couples from across metro Vancouver have known for years that the best kept-secret for a romantic date is at VanDusen Gardens. Last summer, Truffles Café, located in the newly expanded visitors centre, offered up romantic picnic baskets. This year, Truffles is taking it another step further, introducing a charcuterie platter.

The growing trend in Vancouver’s food scene are small plates and charcuterie. Perhaps it is because of our laid back approach and lifestyle that the trend continues to grow in popularity at many of the hottest locations serving up the new and preferred format of dining for couples.

“In Europe, we have always eaten this way,” explains Truffle’s executive chef, Reto Ballat. “It’s relaxed and civilized.”

The new charcuterie platter includes Prosciutto and Genoa Salami, and a rotating selection of cheeses which could include Brie, smoked cheddar and aged Parmesan. Also served with the platter are fresh grapes, dried fruit, artisan biscuits and candied pecans, making the serving big enough for two people.

A romantic date isn’t complete without a glass of wine, and with Truffles new license, they are now offering a selection of BC wine, beer, and cider.

“It’s how I, and my friends, like to eat” says Truffles Café Manager Scott Arnold. “I can imagine people sitting on our patio, looking out at the fantastic view of VanDusen, lingering over the Charcuterie Platter with Wine for a light lunch, or at the end of a hectic work day. You don’t even know you’re in the middle of a bustling city.”

The charcuterie platter is $18 and glasses of wine start at $8.  Order both the platter and two glasses of wine and the price is just $28 (saving $6).

If you have an anniversary, birthday, or other special day coming up and want to surprise your significant other, head to VanDusen Gardens and give the new charcuterie platter with wine a try… you’ll be glad you did.

Nashville by Dylan Ribkoff [Contest]

From the moment they arrive in the mail, you just want to rip the box open. It’s the new Nashville trunks by Montreal underwear designer, Dylan Ribkoff.

When you pull them out of the box you instantly notice the soft fabric. They’re made from 93% cotton and 7% spandex. Cotton is nice because it’s a natural fiber and it’s a comfortable material we love to feel against our body.

The waistband is the show-stopper here. The 1 ¾” metallic silver waistband has the Dylan Ribkoff logo stitched in hot pink. The silver totally pops against the sherbert green fabric.

There is not a lot of room in the pouch area. This isn’t much of a problem if you like your junk to show, especially when you get a bit excited. The pouch is framed by white piping and had a punch of pink from the double-layer fly opening. There’s tasteful white flatlock along the back, adding structure to the underwear.

Sadly, because these are cotton underwear, the bold colour will fade and they will loose their shape over time. So enjoy them and follow the washing instructions so they last as long as possible.

LeBarcelone by Dylan Ribkoff [Contest]

The new LeBarcelone can be summed up pretty easily; they are a tricked out pair of tighty-whities! No, these certainly aren’t the briefs your dad would wear, these underwear have style. Here’s why.

What’s to love about these underwear is the bold 1 3/4” red waistband with the contrasting white stitched Dylan Ribkoff logo spanning the front. From the back, the waistband cheekishly says in white stitching ‘What’s Underneath’ on both the left and right sides. The trim is nicely hidden with matching red thread.

These underwear are made with traditional men’s cotton underwear fabric made of 93% cotton and 7% spandex. Over time, they will fade and stretch from washing and wearing. The back is a solid piece of fabric, so unless you have been doing your Jane Fonda’s and have a tight ass, miracles won’t be worked here.

The legs are nicely finished with white trim and white threading, which keeps them snug and in place throughout the day. The double-layed pouch isn’t overly generous in size, which works to your advantage if you’re well-equipped and want to show off your package. The pouch is framed with white flatlock stitching, bringing focus to the area.

LeBarcelone retail for $24 CDN and can be purchased online.

Dylan Ribkoff is the creation of Canadian designer, Dylan Ribkoff. The Montreal based underwear designer is passionate about innovating the industry by creating uniquely designed undergarments for the fashion-hearted.
