The 2011 Ford F-150 is one fabulous ride. I had the pleasure to test-drive the Platinum series truck during the Mr. Gay Canada competition. Myself and the other delegates all agreed – it was a very nice vehicle.

From the outside, the candy-apple red, quad-cab with its short box is both urban and sporty. The chrome bumpers, tinted windows, and sleek lines give the exterior a confident and bold appearance. When the doors open, the sideboards quickly come down, making it easy to get in and out of the vehicle.

It’s not just stylish on the outside, but on the inside too. Heated leather captains seats, touch-screen navigation controls, multi-colour mood-lighting, moon-roof, and a Sony sound-system. The back seat on it’s own is like a giant leather couch, with leg-room to spare.

The instrument panel was well equipped with standard gauges and a variety of other options including fuel consumption, towing performance and off-roading – all controlled from the steering wheel.

Internet and wireless accessories including mouse and printer are available to quickly adapt into work-mode while out on the road. This is available through the Ford Work Solutions bundle.

The six-speed automatic transmission is standard and comes with SelectShift manual override. It is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine, giving it the best-in-class torque and efficiency (yes, this truck has some get-up and go!). It gets on average 12.9 city / 9.0 hwy L / 100km, which is pretty decent for a full-size 4X4 truck, especially with the price of gas on the rise.

The 20” mag-mounted, all-terrain tires hugged the road around the corners on the Sea-to-Sky highway. The truck was very comfortable to drive both on the open highway and downtown. A rear-mounted camera displayed on the dash when revering, making parallel parking almost effortless.

“For the past 33 years, the Ford F-150 has stood alone as the truck more people rely on,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas.

Overall, the 2011 Ford F-150 provided a safe, smooth, comfortable and most importantly a fun trip up to Whistler for the Mr. Gay Canada competition.

The big trend this spring is bright colours: tangy orange, sunny yellow, leafy green. It’s easy to add colour to an outfit, especially when working with neutral colours and the right accessories. Here are three easy ways to add vibrant colour to your wardrobe using ties by Vancouver’s Knot Theory.

A splash of colour: Start with tops and bottoms of neutral colours of black, white and shades of grey.  Match a knot with accessories including socks, shoes, shoe laces, and pocket squares.

A century ago soldiers in the World War 1 wore scarves around their necks to identify their comrades on the front lines so they wouldn’t accidentally kill or injury the wrong person. Post-war, an innovative New York designer took the idea of the scarf and modified the scarf idea into a fashion accessory; what we consider the modern tie style.

The traditional tie is limited because of its design. The width, materials and patterns can change, but in the end, it’s the shape that locks up its style. And over the past decade, ties have been in the decline as a fashion piece.

But a Vancouver fashion designer has created an innovative new way for both men and women to wear ties in a cutting-edge new way.

“I am changing the silhouette of ties,” said Knotheory founder and owner Tanya Huang. “It’s wearable art. Creative. Not functional. Stylish and artistic. It’s designed to grab attention.”

In 2003, Tanya quit her job in the software industry to pursue her dream of fashion design. After going through her college sketchbooks she came across some concepts around ties and she knew she had to dig deeper. By 2009, after testing and experimenting with a variety of styles and designs, Tanya found the perfect solution.

The result: Knotheory.

Knotheory ties are two parts: the tie and the knot. The tie comes in six unique black and white designs styles starting from $99.

“The tie is the personal signature piece,” Tanya explains. “Pick your personal preference as your art piece.”

With the tie acting as the base, the knot adds the variety and attention. The knot is an asymmetric piece, which forms a perfect four-in-hand knot.

The knot was inspired by the early 19^th century detachable cuffs and chained cufflinks, the knot is secured with a stainless steel chain link. The knots are available in a variety of colours and embroidered designs.

The two-part tie and knot system means that you will never have to worry about tying and re-tying ties to the right length or worry about making the correct knot shape.

“For people that don’t know how to tie a tie, you can go to YouTube to learn how,” Tanya explained. “My customers are more stylish. They know how to tie ties. I really wanted it to be something that is at a different level.”

Because of the great tie shapes and flexibility of wearing a tie as a casual or formal fashion piece, Knothoery is hitting so many different demographics. The ties can be dressed up for formal events such as weddings, be worn with a business suit, dressed down with casual business attire and transform again to fit into your day-to-day casual wear.

Modal continues to the be one of the best fabrics for underwear designers in 2011, and Vancouver specialty jock and pouch designer and manufacturer, McKillop U/W has just released the Classic 2.0 Jock collection.

Sustainable and environmentally friendly, the modal material is a manufactured cotton derived from quick-growth beech trees. The silky material is also known for its breathability and moisture-wicking properties, making the garment ideal for both every day and athletic use.

The new low-cut jock has been designed with an expandable pouch to enhance the natural movement, also providing additional support and lift. The leg straps lift and raise, giving the buttocks a firm and enhanced look, and the backless design allows dress-pants and exercise gear to hang in a natural position without showing seams and traditional underwear lines.

Other features in the new jock include a new easy-to-remove contents label, updated elastic waistband and in the pouch models, an optional support ring is included.

This week the makers of Naked Boxer Brief, have launched their latest premium men’s line, the Naked Undershirt.

The Canadian designed and made undershirt is made from Italian micro modal. The soft, light weight fabric has been spun on a 44 gauge machine, making the premium garment stay fitted to the skin.

“I’ve never been as excited about a fabric as I am about the Italian micro modal fabric for our newest undershirts,” said Naked CEO, Joel Primus. “We set ourselves apart by showing people fabrics that will feel absolutely perfect against their skin.”

It’s true. The high-end undershirts fit comfortably. The seaming is similar in style to the Naked Boxers where the seams are minimized, so there are less undergarment lines. It also has a nice, long length, which means it will stay tucked in throughout the day.

The world of underwear just got more fun and exciting with the recent release of Jack of Pump, by Montreal underwear designers Pump!  The Jack of Pump is a modern take on a classic design, cleverly incorporating a the Jack of Hearts from a casino blackjack playing card onto a pair of men’s fashion underwear.

As first glace, these underwear will make you want to touch them and try them on. The bold colour palette and rubberized graphics will fill a gap in your underwear drawer.

A coloured imprinted face of the jack proudly sits on the right front hip, a red imprinted heart front and centre on the pouch, and a bright red rubber ‘J’ jumps off the left hip. Three small red rubber diamonds adorn the back right side.

The underwear is made from 96% cotton and 4% spandex, giving them a soft, comfortable, form-fitting fit. They are comfortable enough to wear all day; and the cotton is easy breathing.

A classic low-rise trunk style is about all that is standard about this underwear. The electric blue, 1.25” dual embossed logo waistband really stands out. There is a huge white Pump! logo across the front, and another smaller Pump! logo on the back right side. The extra thick metallic-elastic waistband keeps the garment securely in place while you go about your activities.

The dual-layered, contoured pouch provides ample room and the red trim enhances the form-fitting shape. The legs have bright blue trim with complimentary reinforced blue stitching.

When putting on Pump! underwear for the first time, the stiffness of the rubber coating appears to feel uncomfortable, however, after having them on for just a few moments, it’s not even noticeable.

Machine wash warm, only non-chlorine bleach. Tumble dry on low head. Cool iron if needed (avoiding rubber areas). Wash with bright or white colors separately.

Pump! underwear tends to fit small; consider purchasing one size larger than you normally wear.
