Horse Whisperer [Contest]

Alberta Premium Dark HorseIn less than a year, Canadians have shown a renewed interest in Canadian whisky. It’s pretty easy to see why – there have been great strides by the distilleries to produce premium whisky products at prices consumers can afford. One of the latest to hit store shelves is Alberta Premium Dark Horse.

It’s time to forget about the days of your grandparents rye-whiskies that burned and left a bitter after-taste. The new Dark Horse is refined with flavours of vanilla, smoke, sweet oak and savoury dried fruit including plum and dried currant.

Dark Horse is made in Canada, for Canada, and with 100% Canadian prairie rye grain. It is blended at a 45% strength in small batches after aging in handpicked, heavily charred white oak barrels. The rich, almost burgundy colour shimmers through the classic burboun style bottle.

“Alberta Premium Dark Horse is one of the richest tasting Canadian whiskies with some of the highest barrel ageing extractives available on shelf,” says Dan Tullio, Canadian Whisky Master Ambassador, Beam Canada Inc. “Tasting Dark Horse, you experience a horseshoe-shaped pattern on the tongue with tanginess and spice on the sides and sweetness on the tip, with a deliciously smooth, long finish.

Alberta Premium Dark Horse 750ml bottles is a new permanent listing on whisky shelves across Canada: Alberta ($28.99)British Columbia ($28.99), Manitoba ($29.99), Nova Scotia ($29.99), New Brunswick ($29.99), Ontario ($29.95), and Saskatchewan ($31.95).

The Horse Whisperer:

  • 1 oz Alberta Premium Dark Horse
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • 2 oz ginger ale

Measure ingredients into a small rocks glass with a whisky stone. Garnish with a fresh orange slice.

LGBT Musician, Tyrell Witherspoon, Looks To Fans to Help with New Album

Canadian based singer, songwriter, actor and dancer, Tyrell Witherspoon, has quickly become one of the fastest growing independent, openly gay recording artists in British Columbia. Since the release of his first single two years ago, Tyrell has travelled across Canada performing for thousands of people at a variety of festivals, Pride events, and at some of the hottest clubs.

Over the next two months, Tyrell will be working on the next part of his journey, expanding his music career through the help of his current and future fans.

“I have launched my first Pledge Music Campaign to raise money to help produce my new EP, Scorpio, which I would like to release this January,” Tyrell explained. “I’m looking to raise $3,000 to afford studio costs and production.”

As an independent recording artist, there are a lot of costs that go into producing an EP. Funds raised will be used to pay for studio sessions for vocal recordings, hire an engineer and producer to create the album’s overall sound, and to promote the album once it’s released to generate both awareness and sales.

“Twenty-five per cent of any dollars raised above and beyond my target will help benefit Out in Schools,” Tyrell said as he described how the organization helps combat bullying in public schools across British Columbia. “They truly do some amazing work that I absolutely stand behind and believe in.”

If you would like to make a contribution to the creation of Scorpio, you can make a pledge on Tyrell’s Pledge Music Campaign page. Each pledge comes with a  special thank you reward from Tyrell.

Apple Crisp

This week’s Cocktail of the Week pay homage to autumn. In Canada, that means bursts of red, orange and golden colours as the leaves on the trees turn colour, and we light the fire as we begin settling in for the long ,Canadian winter ahead. After a prosperous summer growing season, autumn is the time of harvest and preserving, and nothing say Autumn in Canada like grandma’s hot apple crisp.

Today’s cocktail tastes just like grandma’s apple crisp, only this one is liquid and has a bit of a kick. It’s rich, smooth, and creamy. The cinnamon gives a familiar warm sensation, while the maple syrup adds a distinct Canadian edge.

Queer Canadian Musician, Stacey Tennen, Releases Debut Single

Three years after winning top prize in the inaugural season of Canada’s biggest LGBT talent competition, Queer Idol, R&B musician, Stacey Tennen, has released her first single, Partner in Crime.

The catchy debut song showcases Stacey’s impressive vocal range and powerful voice. Stacey co-wrote Partner in Crime with Juno award winner Gavin Bradley.

“I wanted to create a song that everyone would enjoy,” Stacey explained. “That’s the beauty of music – you can write a song about a lesbian relationship that a hetrosexual guy in Timmins would relate to. To me, the best way to educate others is by show them we’re really not that different.

Her influences include Mariah Carey, a mainstream musician who has found success even after coming out about her sexuality.

“Nobody should have to hide who they are to be successful,” Stacey said.  “I am very proud of who and what I am but I want to create music that will appeal to masses.”

“The music industry has always had lingering, unspoken rule that artists need to be tight-lipped about their sexual orientation,” explained Spectra Producer, Ralph Hamelmann. “Given the size of Canada’s LGBT community and its infrastructure, I believe there’s a market for LGBT recording artists. But frankly, I’d hate to see Stacey pigeon-holed as a ‘lesbian singer’. She’s a phenomenal talent who can easily become a mega-star.”

Cory Monteith; Hit TV Series Actor and Grand Marshall of the 2011 Grey Cup Parade

[slideshow]

The Grand Marshal of the 2011 Grey Cup Parade in Vancouver was actor / director, Cory Monteith, best known as Finn Hudson on the hit television series, Glee. The parade was held on Saturday, November 26, 2011, and despite the pouring rain, Cory proudly wore a BC Lions jersey as he rode in the back of a pick-up truck along the parade route through downtown Vancouver. Thousands of CFL and Glee fans lined the streets hoping to get a glimpse of the now famous BC actor.

Before the parade route got underway, Cory signed a number of autographs and had hit photo taken with dozens of fans who happened upon him in the parade staging area. The parade even paused for a brief moment for Cory to have his photo taken with the national sport treasure, the Grey Cup.

Born on May 11, 1982 in Calgary, Alberta, Cory grew up in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. Cory’s parents divorced when he was just seven years old. He and his older brother grew up with his mother.

The now successful actor does have a shady past. Throughout his teen years Cory dropped out of high school, abused drugs and had a drinking problem. He eventually went to counselling and in 2011 received his high school diploma through a Victoria-based alternative school.

In 2010, Cory co-hosted the Teen Choice Awards and hosted the Gemini Awards in Toronto, Ontario.

Cory has also appeared in numerous Canadian-made television series including  Smallville, Supernatural, Flash Gordon, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG-1, and played minor acting roles in the movies Final Destination 3, Whisper and Deck the Halls.
