Birthday Cake Martini

Happy Birthday to me! Yes, this weekend it is my birthday.

IMG_9945_sm

Did you know the song, Happy Birthday to You, is the most recognized song in the English language and has been translated into more than 18 languages? The song was originally written and composed by American sisters, Patty and Mildred Hill in 1893, based on the song, Good Morning to All, which was easily sung by most small children.

Birthday parties are full of traditions. It is customary at birthday parties for the birthday person to be seated with a cake with the number of candles equal to the age of the birthday person, lit, while the guests sing Happy Birthday to You. At the end of the song, the birthday person, makes a wish and then blows out the candles, hoping their wish comes true. The crowd would applause the important moment. The first piece of birthday cake is served to the birthday person, then to the remaining guests. After the birthday cake, gifts are presented to the birthday person.

While cake is traditional at most birthday parties, nothing would be more suitable at my birthday party than a Birthday Cake Martini!

  • 1½ oz UV Cake Vodka
  • ½ oz Amaretto Liqueur
  • ½ oz Lemonade
  • ½ oz Cranberry Juice

Rim a martini glass with coloured sprinkles. Fill a cocktail shaker half filled with ice. Pour in all four ingredients. Shake hard for 20 seconds, until the shaker is frosted. Strain into a martini glass. Top with whipped cream, garnish with a maraschino cherry, and celebrate with a candle!

Tips on How to Host a the Best 70′s Retro Disco Fever Party

[slideshow]

Theme parties are a great way to get a group of friends together. With a few key items and attention to detail, you can turn a modern room into a disco inferno! Here are some tips to hosting a successful 70’s retro disco party.

The cheapest way to get a costume is to break into your parents, grand parents, aunt and uncles closets and attics – they are more than likely to have a few retro / vintage pieces that would work great. If that’s not an option, head to your local thrift store – there are always good finds if you look close. Alternatively, vintage shops have wide selections of authentic clothing, however, you’ll pay a higher price.

Having the right snacks on hand will help set the mood. Borrow retro dishware from friends or buy is from second hand stores –people will certainly notice the detail here. Here are some great examples of traditional 70’s party food to serve:

  • Celery with cheese whiz
  • Devilled eggs
  • Triscuits with sausage, marble cheese and a olives
  • Ritz cracker and cheese whiz
  • Pickles – yum yum’s, gherkins, and sweet onions
  • Jelly fruit salad

For décor, it’s easy to change the mood of the room by using fabrics. Look for brown, gold, orange, purple and lime green – fall colour palettes with contrasting bright colours work best. Use them to cover couches, tables and other furniture. Changing a lampshade is another easy way to take a room back in time. Don’t forget the disco ball!

Finally, set the tone by playing era specific music playing the in the background. Bee Gee’s,  Dr Hook, Village People, Gloria Gaynor, Sister Sledge, and Kenny Rogers are just a few of the artists to ensure you have loaded into your retro iTunes playlist.

Serve classic cocktails including Tom Collins, Greyhounds, fruit punch and Pink Lady’s!

This Holiday Season, Go Rogue at Rogue Wet Bar

[slideshow]

The very busy holiday season is about to get under way. The hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, holiday parties, events and meeting up with friends. If you’re looking for a great place to meet up with friends this holiday season for a cocktail, try Rogue Wet Bar.

Over the past few months I’ve had the pleasure to both host and attend tweet-ups at Rogue Wet Bar, located in Vancouver’s Gastown district. Rogue Wet Bar is inside Waterfront Station terminal – the central downtown Vancouver hub for Canada Line, SkyTrain, the West Coast Express and the Seabus – meaning it’s easy to get to no matter where you are coming from in Metro Vancouver.

The ambiance is very warm and inviting. The vaulted ceilings are stunning, as are the wonderful light figures which proudly hang over-head. The effective use of hanging fabrics and draperies help play down the noise typically found in a lounge.

Traditional libations can be found on the menu, however they also feature a number of signature cocktails. The fare is savoury and comforting. The use of fresh ingredients prepared by skilled artisans in the kitchen is evident. The staff are also extremely friendly and personable.

Rogue Wet Bar is very active in social media and often hosts contests and special offers for those that follow on Twitter and check-in on Four Square.

Follow Rogue Wet Bar on Twitter and visit their website.
