Hollywood

IMG_9961_sm - HollywoodFrom movie stars to rock stars, for decades, all the big names find their way to Hollywood. A district within the City of Los Angeles, Hollywood has been home to major television and recording studios. Thousands of people flock to the area to see the famous sights including the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Capitol Record Building, the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Bowl, Paramount Pictures, the Roosevelt Hotel, and the ever popular Universal Studios.

On Friday, February 24, 2013, the 85th Annual Academy Awards will be held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Perhaps this classic southern cocktail will be served to the many stars who will be walking across the red carpet that night.

  • 1.5 oz Vodka
  • Splash of fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz Triple sec
  • 1 oz Pineapple juice
  • 1 oz Grapefruit Juice

Pour all ingredients into a martini shaker half filled with ice. Shake for 20 seconds, until the shaker begins to frost. Pour into a chilled martini glass.

Mashti Malone, Russian Ice Cream

If you find yourself in Hollywood, California, off the beaten track you’ll find one of the most wonderful hidden delights, Mashti Malone, home of the most amazing Russian ice cream.

The idea came from a Russian farmer who, over a century ago, had a vision of combining fresh cream with the beautiful scent of roses. Though some creative experimentation, rosewater ice cream was born.

Founded in 1980, Mashti Malone now makes dozens of natural flavours fresh, in-store. The simple ingredients dance on the taste buds. Flavours include soybean milk, rose water, saffron, ginger, and pistachio nuts.

Find your way to this hidden gem at 1525 North La Brea Avenue, Hollywood, California. It’s truly heaven.

City of Vancouver Paints Rainbow Crosswalks

The corner of Denman and Davie Streets are alive with colour today after the City of Vancouver painted the 4 crosswalks of the intersection with the colours of the rainbow, just in time for this weekend’s Vancouver Pride.

This is the first year the City of Vancouver has ever painted a crosswalk or any other landmark in the gay village for Vancouver Pride. Perhaps they got the idea from a blog post I published in June after returning home from LA Pride; where the City of West Hollywood painted the crosswalk in Boys Town in a rainbow at the cost of over $12,000.

City staffers did not return my requests of where the idea came from at the time I published this post. Regardless of where the idea came from, it’s a great gesture from the City of Vancouver. It is not known if the crosswalks will be painted only for Pride weekend, or if the City plans on making them  permanent.

The City of Vancouver is a large supporter of Vancouver Pride, the largest annual event held in the city. The city proudly flies the rainbow flag at City Hall, issues a proclamation announcing Pride Week, participates in the Pride Parade and hangs the colourful rainbow flags throughout the city.

A big thank you to the City of Vancouver for supporting Pride, embracing diversity and the LGBT community!

Rainbow Crosswalks for Pride

Boystown in West Hollywood just got a big splash of colour for the month of June thanks to an initiative by the City of West Hollywood. The crosswalk at the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard has been pained in a rainbow theme in celebration of pride month.

At a cost of $12,920USD, the City of West Hollywood turned the pedestrian crossing into the rainbow colours just in time for LA Pride. This is the first time in North America a city has painted a pedestrian crossing in pride colours. The crosswalk will be maintained in the pride colours though out the month of June and will go back to it’s traditional red brick colour afterwards.

Mayor Jeff Prang and Councilmember John Duran both supported the initiative. West Hollywood City Hall was also lit up in lavender lights and LAX pylons glowed purple in honour of Pride.

Capitol Records Tower, Hollywood

Hollywood & Vine, an iconic address, it home to another icon, the Capitol Records Tower.  Few buildings are as closely associated with the music building that this historic tower.

Built in 1956 and resembling a stack of records on a turntable, the building features a blinking light at the top of the tower which spells out Hollywood in Morse code. This was Capitol Records way of subtly highlighting the fact they were the first major record label to be headquartered in Hollywood. As the industry shifted from New York and Broadway to Hollywood and the movies, many recording artists acted in films and television, Capitol was right there in the action.  The tower still houses the Capitol Studio.

Dubbed “the house that Nat built” due to the popularity and sales of Nat King Cole’s recordings. The studio has spawned some of the most timeless and treasured recordings in music history, from Judy Garland to the Beastie Boys. The first album recorded in the studio was “Frank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poems Of Color”. Before forming his own record label, Sinatra recorded some of his most memorable classics with Capitol; In The Wee Small Hours, Swing Easy & Come Fly With Me to name a few.

The future of the studio is in question as Capitol Records parent company EMI sold the tower and surrounding property to developers.  Although the building is on the List of Registered Historic Places it would be a shame to lose such an iconic recording studio.

Desperate for Desperate Housewives? Check out Universal Studios Hollywood

Wonder what it would be like to be on Wisteria Lane from ABC’s hit television show, Desperate Housewives? Well now you can thanks to Universal Studios in Hollywood, California.

Desperate  Housewives is an American TV comedy-drama series set on a seemingly perfect suburban neighbourhood of Wisteria Lane in a fictional American town of Fairview, in the Eagle State. The set for the show is located at Universal Studios Hollywood and is open to the public for daily tours.

There are two ways to see Wisteria Lane in person; take the general admission narrated Tram Tour or the Private Guided Tour.

While the tour on the Lane lasts for a short three or four minutes, it’s an excellent way to be able to have bragging rights to say you’ve seen the set.

The Ultimate VIP experience goes at a much slower pace, allowing you to get better photos of the homes and learn insider information from an experienced guide in a private trolley. The VIP experience also includes valet parking, gourmet lunch and many other perks throughout the theme park like front-of-line, reserved seating and access to areas closed to the general public.

Reservations are required for the VIP tour, and they fill up fast. For more information on Universal Studios Hollywood visit their website.

Movie enthusiasts will enjoy the fully narrated tram tour  through the back lot, featuring the many sound stages including New York Street and Courthouse Square. The tram tour also takes riders past famous movie sets including Jaws, War of the Worlds, the legendary Bates Motel from Psycho, and Wisteria Lane from ABC’s hit series Desperate Housewives. After the tour, check out the Sound Stage to learn how special effects are done.

The theme park is perfect for rollercoaster fans. The Mummy, Jurassic Park, and the Simpson’s are all action-packed, heart pounding adventures. The House of Horrors will have you screaming as your worst nightmares come true.

Adult Film Star, Actor, and Director, Brent Everett, is ‘Wetter Than Ever’. You can win to be Wet too!

Since Brent Everett was a child he has been fascinated with the world of film. His parents realized at a very young age he was full of imagination and creativity.  When Brent was just a small child his parents purchased a camcorder, and right from the start, Brent was mesmerized and interested in film.

When Brent was 10, his parents purchased a new video camera and gave him their old one.

“He began immediately making movies,” said Brent’s mom. ”Not porno’s [laughs], but action movies with clay men and toy cars.” Brent was off and filming his own movies complete with story lines and characters.

They were sophisticated movies too. He would built backgrounds for his homemade movies. “With the proper camera angle, the movies he made were absolutely amazing,” continued Brent’s mom.

As Brent grew up the subject matter changed and so did Brent’s ideas. At the age of 18, Brent entered the adult entertainment industry and hasn’t looked back. He has been in 18 adult film titles.

In 2006 Brent took time away from being in adult films to set-up his own production studio. Brent recently directed his first film. It is currently in editing and he is searching for a distributor.

Brent was also cast for the role of Jake in the TV documentary series Gay Pornstars. The late night tv series follows porn stars in their work, life and love. The series, shot and aired in 2009, was directed by John Roecker and consisted of six 30-minute episodes and a one-hour special.

As for acting, Brent says, “I’ll pursue anything really.” Maybe one day we will see Brent on the silver screen of Hollywood, but for now, he is going to focus on directing.

“I love being behind the camera. It’s where my passion lies.” said Brent. There is no doubt that Brent will be directing and releasing more films in the future as he lets his creative energies flow.

You can see Brent in the recent release of  Brent Everett is Wetter Than Ever. Brent starred in this scene from CR1 Productions with Donny Wright. And in this film things really are, slippery when wet.
