Joe Jonas

This past summer Joe Jonas came to Vancouver to perform at the Summer Playland Festival at Playland / PNE. The 45 minute set was a shot stopper for many Jonas Brother fans who were able to get within just a few feet of the outdoor stage.

Gabriel Saporta, Cobra Starship

Lead singer for Cobra Starship, Gabriel Saporta, has enjoyed a very exciting and fast paced music career. He was the creative energy for the formation of the synthpop band, which has put out four albums since they formed in 2003.

Cobra Starship is made up of five members, including Gabe (lead vocals). The other band members are Ryland Blackinton (guitar), Victoria Asher  (keytarist), Nate Novarro (drummer), and Alex Suarez (bass).

The New York based band has released four albums and is currently signed to record label Decaydance.

  • Hot Mess (2009–2010)
  • Night Shades (2011–present)

Prior to founding Cobra Starship, Gabriel was the bass player and lead vocalist for the dance-punk band, Midtown. Gabe was born in Uraguay on October 11, 1979 and moved to New York when he was four years old. Gabe is a vegetarian, an active PETA member, and is currently dating fashion designer, Erin Fetherston.

In 2011, Gabe and the rest of the Cobra Starship band appeared on Season 4, Episode 5 of 90210, ‘Rock the Vote’,  and performed their new song, #1night.

Gabe also made an appearance on Season 5, Episode 24 of his favourite TV show, Gossip Girl, where he played a drug-addict named Zeke.

The New Cities

It’s been a busy year from The New Cities, as they tour across North America promoting their current album, Kill the Lights. They band has performed at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Bamboozle in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and the Summer Playland Festival in Vancouver, BC.

The Juno nominated band, The New Cities, got together in Trois-Rivers, Quebec back in 2006 when they released their first independent album, The New Cities EP. By 2008 they were signed with Sony Music Canada, and in 2009 released their second album, Lost in City Lights.

Throughout 2011, TNC released a number of singles in the lead up to their third album, Kill the Lights. After the album was released they joined Avril Lavigne’s Canadian tour, Black Star Tour.

The band has gained notoriety with their music appearing in shows including Gossip Girl and Degrassi Takes Manhattan. Two of their songs were used in each Season 2 and Season 3 of So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

 


Victoria Duffield

Just weeks after releasing her newest single, Break My Heart, 17 year old singer, dancer and actress, Victoria Duffield performed live at Playland in Vancouver as part of the SFP Concert on Sunday, July 8, 2012.

Victoria was a contestant on season three of YTV’s reality show, The Next Star. She placed into the top 6. After the show, she went on to sign with Warner Music Canada and released her first single, Secrets.

In September 2010, Victoria released Fever, on iTunes, followed by two more singles in 2011 on her debut album, Bam Bam and Hey!!! In February 2012, Feel was released.


Gayday at Playland

The annual Gayday at Playland is the sign that Vancouver Pride is just around the corner. The LGBT community is invited on Saturday, July 14 from 10:00am – 8:00pm for a day of rides, carnival games, entertainment and fun. Wear a pink shirt to support anti-bullying.

The Vancouver Pride Society will have a Pride Festival area with a BBQ and information on Vancouver’s LGBT community.

Say “I’m here for Gay Day” at the gate and receive a $5 discount. For every ticket sold $6 will go to the Vancouver Pride Society. Park pass includes unlimited access to over 30 rides and attractions, including Revelation and the Drop Zone.

      


Summer Playland Festival 2012

This summer, some of the hottest acts including Marianas Trench, Joe Jonas, One Republic, Dragonette, Cobra Starship, and Carly Rae Jepson, are coming to perform at Playland from July 6-8, 2012.

The teen-targeted music festival is the first-ever of its kind in North America. All together there will be 21 exciting live concerts, seven each day over the three day event.

“We’re thrilled to be able to offer this incredible teen summer music festival and believe it will be a great way for youth to kick-off the summer season,” said Mike McDaniel, President and CEO, Pacific National Exhibition.  “We think it’s a fantastic addition to our summer programming at Playland and will be a great lead in to our 17-day Summer Night Concert Series that happens nightly during the Fair at the PNE.”

The PNE amphitheater stage acts include Dragonette, Carly Rae Jepsen, Marianas Trench, Danny Fernandes, Gym Class Heroes, OneRepublic, Hot Chelle Rae, Joe Jonas and Cobra Starship.

Park Stage acts: DiRTY Radio, Kaylee Johnston, Neverest, The Proper Villains, Jackie Valentine, Eric Solomon, Kristina Maria, Jesse Giddings, Victoria Duffield, and The New Cities.

Single and multi-day concert ticket holders will have full access to all the rides at Playland too.

Tickets are now on sale through Ticket Leader or and the PNE. Single Day tickets are $59 for Bleachers, $89 for Floor and $129 for VIP.  Three day Festival Passes are $159 for Bleachers, $229 for Floor and $329 for VIP.

 


Playland Opens this Weekend!

Summer is just around the corner and it wouldn’t be complete without Vancouver’s favourite amusement park, Playland at the PNE, which opens this Saturday, April 28, for another season of fun!

If you missed out on Atmosphere last summer, it’s back again this year, along with the corkscrew, wooden rollercoaster and the bumper cars!

There is a host of live concerts planned for throughout the summer too including Mariana’s Trench, Sarah McLachlan and Jann Arden.

The best deal on day tickets is by buying online or at a local 7-11. For the best summer fun value, season PlayPasses are on sale too!


Gay Days at Playland

An annual tradition to kicking off Pride in Vancouver is Gay Day at Playland. On Saturday, July 16, the LGBT community decents on the amusement park for a day of rides, roller coasters, carnival games and theme-park  fare.

Participants are encouraged to wear a red t-shirt, creating an ocean of red around the park.

There is live entertainment and a beer garden.

Gay Day is hosted during regular park hours and regular admission fees apply.
