Poutine

There are three iconic Canadian foods; maple syrup, smoked salmon and poutine. The first two are very well-known around the world, yet many have yet to know and experience one of the best fast-food dishes that originates from Quebec – Poutine!

Poutine is simple and easy to make. Fresh, hot French fries, topped with fresh cheese curds, and covered in brown gravy.

The fries are typically a medium cut and are deep fried. The cheese curds must be fresh; less than a day old, so they will melt and squeak. The brown gravy sauce is made from chicken and beef gravy, with a hint of pepper. The hot gravy softens and melts the cheese curds.

Poutine can also include bacon, chicken or Montreal smoked meat.

Le Petit Bistro – Montreal, Quebec

Next time you find yourself in Montreal, Quebec, I would recommend having dinner at a small authentic French restaurant in the east side of the Village named, Le Petit Bistro.

The small friendly restaurant opened in 2006. The menu features many French bistro classics including onion soup, escargot, warm goat cheese salad, steak frites, duck confit, Angus flank steak with shallots, beef tartar and more. All meals include a soup or salad, entre, dessert and coffee or tea. There is a small but good wine selection to choose from.

The warm and friendly décor is very European. There are three distinct areas of the restaurant ranging from bright and cheerful, to dimly lit and romantic.

The servers are incredibly friendly. Because it is in the French area of Montreal, they are more comfortable speaking in French, however, if you ask politely in French if they can speak English, they will switch languages for Anglophone patrons.

The outdoor patio is open during the summer season and there is a private room available for groups.

Le Petit Bistro offers excellent value for home cooked French cuisine. Make reservations at least 24 hours in advance; this little tucked away restaurant gets very busy!
