DOXA Documentary Film Festival

DOXA Documentary FIlm Festival LogoFrom Vancouver, across Canada, and around the world; 74 screenings of documentaries appearing at five venues in Vancouver make up the 12 annual DOXA Documentary Film Festival. Held May 3 – 12, 2013, the 10-day celebration of films, panel discussions, education programs, and other events, becomes the medium of expression to look at the world through the lens.

The documentaries cover a wide variety of theme ranging including surrealism, science fiction, and narrative. Screenings will take place at the Vancouver Playhouse, VIFFʼs Vancity Theatre, The Cinematheque, Rio Theatre, and Collingwood Cinema.

Here are a few examples of the shows for 2013:

Interior. Leather Bar. — James Franco’s new documentary hybrid.

I Am Divine — About the wonderful drag queen, Divine, by filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz who’s film, Vito, screened at DOXA last year.

Fire in the Blood – A film that looks into the battle between pharmaceutical companies and access to HIV medication around the world.

Straight with You – A short film, Rated Y for Youth shorts program, Empathy: Pass It On. The film is about an 11-year-old boy as he navigates adolescence and sexuality.

God Loves Uganda – Christian missionaries. Africa. Homosexuality. It’s a powerful film.

General admission tickets are $12. Tickets can be purchased in bundles and for the numerous special events.

Salt Spring Air

Salt Spring Airoffers daily scheduled flights to/from Salt Spring Island. 2011 Grey Cup Festival Ceremonies, Events and Concerts

For November 25-27, Vancouver will come alive with dozens of family and adult friendly events, award ceremonies and concerts in celebration of the 99th Annual Grey Cup Championship.

Here are some of the highlights over the next three days:

Friday, November 25

Mamma Mia! Returns to Vancouver; one week only

Inspired by the magic of ABBA’s songs including “Dancing Queen”, “S.O.S.”, “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me”, Mamma Mia’s! North American tour is returning to Vancouver from Tuesday, August 16 through Sunday, August 21.

Mamma Mia! is a musical set to the classic songs by ABBA. The story is about an independent single mother, Donna, who owns a small hotel on a Greek island. Her daughter, Sophie, is about to get married, and Donna has invited her two lifelong friends, Tanya and Rosie. Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

Sophie begins her mission to find her father to walk her down the aisle, bringing three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they had visited 20 years earlier. The next 24 hours of their lives will encounter new love and the rekindling of old romances.

Mamma Mia! will be performing at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver on Tuesday, August 16 through Saturday August 20 at 8pm, and Sunday, August 21 at 7:30pm, and additional Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm.

Tickets range from $25 – 88 plus applicable charges. Tickets are on sale online now or by phone at 1-855-985-5000.

The current North American Tour has played over 3,000 performances in over 130 cities with 125 repeat visits.
