Unstuck – The Question of Monogamy [Contest]

Unstuck photoThe question on monogamy comes up in almost every relationship at one time or another. For some, it’s a sensitive topic, for others, it’s not a big deal. For Matt and Tim, a gay-couple that have been together for 10 years, it turns their cozy home into a battlefield. Their story is told in the live-theatre performance, Unstuck, coming to Vancouver March 16-23, 2013.

The show is based upon the characters, Tim and Matt, who have enjoyed a wonderful monogamous relationship. Like most gay-couples, the question of an open relationship has come up, through the proverbial knock at the door. The unexpected guest for the couple to quickly re-evaluate their relationship and explore their options.

“The impetus for the play was a conversation I had with my boyfriend many years back about monogamy,” explained the Toronto playwrite, Evan Tsitsias. “I feel that at every one of us at some point in our lives and relationships have to discuss or contemplate this decision and what it means inside our relationship.”

Evan hopes this performance will provoke people to take a hard look at their own perspective of the themes from the show, and to see if they can separate sex from love, and what it means to them, and their relationship.

Produced by Screaming Weenie Productions, the show is directed by Michael Dobbin. The performance is guaranteed to bring the conversation of open relationships to the forefront of conversation. The cast for the Vancouver performance includes local actors, Sean Harris Oliver, Ari Solomon, and Kevin Kraussier.

Catch Unstuck at the PAL Vancouver Studio Theatre (581 Cardero Street), March 16-23, 2013. Tickets are $20 (plus HST), and are available online and at the door.

ICON Finale Featuring Manila Luzon

It’s with much anticipation that Vancouver will be welcoming Manila Luzon back to Vancouver this Friday, November 23, 2012 for the TFD Presents ICON finale at Post Modern Night Club in Gastown.

Best known as the runner-up of the third season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and returning contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars, Manila is a fan-favourite. Manila was originally scheduled to perform at ICON in early October, but due to the untimely passing of her life partner, Sahara Davenport, her show was rescheduled for the later November date.

The $15 advance tickets are available at Priape.

JuJuBee Talks RuPaul’s Drag Race

JuJuBee was in Vancouver in August 2012 for Vancouver Pride, and she returns on October 12 for ICON at Post Modern Night Club.

With RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars set to launch in a few weeks, it was time to check-in with JuJuBee to get the inside stories on past series and events.

Since finishing in third place on Season 2, JuJuBee continues to keep in close contact with her girls, Raven, Manila, Mariah and Ongina.

At the beginning of each of the seasons, contestants are given a strict set of rules to follow. They are clearly explained, and contestants are monitored to ensure they are not breaking these rules.

One of the biggest scandals in the Drag Race series was when William was dismissed for breaking the Drag Race Rules.

“Tyra, Raven and myself were there for 30 days and it was 28 days of work,” JuJuBee explained. “It was all-day. I never found time to think of anything outside of the competition. We weren’t allowed to have phone or anything outside of this world we were living in. It didn’t even cross my mind to break the rules.”

Another piece of information people are excited to know about is, will JuJuBee be returning as a Professor on Drag U.

“Yes! I return again,” exclaimed JuJuBee. The show, Drag U, has been picked up for a third season and she is excited to continue to mentor upcoming drag queens.

For some of the drag queens on Drag U, it can be challenging, especially as they dig deep to find their inner diva. Some are more willing than others to take tips and advice from a seasoned professional.

“It’s a great experience to help someone open up to themselves,” JuJuBee said, as she described her personal experience as a Professor on the show. “You never know who you are until it’s told to you. We help mentor that. It’s a special moment. We are there to guide them with their hair and make-up. It’s definitely an emotional thing.”

JuJuBee will be performing at TFD Presents ICON in Vancouver on Friday, October 12 at Post Modern Night Club. Tickets are $20 (plus HST), and are available at Priape and Little Sister’s Bookstore on Davie Street.

Notre Dame Basilica, Montreal

One of the most notable and iconic buildings in Montreal is the Notre Dame Basilica. Located at 110 Notre-Dame Street, at the corner of Saint Sulpice Street in Old Montreal, the gothic revival cathedral is a must-see for any visitor to the city.

The exterior is beautiful masonry, statues, and towers. The interior is elegantly decorated with detailed woodcarvings and exquisite religious figures. The deep blue ceiling has golden stars. Rich azures, reds, purples, silver and gold colours add to the regal interior.

The giant stained glass windows depict scenes from the religious history of Montreal.

High above, at the rear of the sanctuary is a Casavant Freres pipe organ from 1891. It has four keyboards, 92 stops, 7,000 individual pipes and a pedal board.

Notable and high profile events to take place at Notre Dame in recent memory include the October 3, 2000 state funeral of Pierre Elliot Trudeau, the 15th Prime Minster of Canada, and the December 17, 1994 wedding of Canadian singer, Celine Dion, to Rene Angelil.

Entry to Notre Dame Basilica is $5 per person. It is free to attend mass.

A special sound and light show detailing the history of the cathedral is held Tuesday through Thursday evenings. Tickets are $10 for adults.

Manila Luzon Returns to Vancouver for ICON

Since competing on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Manila Luzon’s life has been turned upside down, inside-out and spun round-and-round. All in a good way that is. The super-star drag queen has been busy with helping with charity events, performing across North America and working on her music career. It’s exhausting just thinking about it.

“I find that with my new found reality television ‘celebrity’ status I can help by raising awareness to the causes,” Manila said as she described how she’s been involved in helping out LGBT organizations since the show. “I have done events with AIDS Service Center NYC, Gay Mens Health Crisis, hosted for the GLAAD Amplifier Awards, and I’ve filmed a Gilead PSA with some fellow cast mates from Drag Race.”

Last year Manila put out her single, Hot Couture, and as a follow-up, she recently released XXXcessory, which she co-wrote with the tour keyboardist for Blondie.

“The video has the kids going crazy,” Manila exclaimed. “I’m releasing remixes very soon and I’m really excited because the original version of the song is great, but the remix are SICK’NING!”

Manila spend part of her summer filming with MTV for an episode of Made, where she coaches a young man to become a drag queen. The show will be coming out this fall.

It was announced this summer that Manila will be returning to RuPaul’s Drag Race for the All Star’s series.

“I had such a fun ride from my experience on Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Manila said. “To have the extremely rare opportunity to do it all over again is beyond measure.”

Strategy is a key part of any reality TV show and clearly Manila went into Season 3 with a plan. But what about for All Star’s?

“My strategy was to do what worked from my first time and that is just to be myself and have fun doing it,” Manila confirmed. She was careful not to give away any of the show secrets – so watch as the action unfolds on upcoming episodes.

Most of Manila’s work centers on her performances. She spends a lot of time on the road, performing in clubs, Pride festivals and LGTB events.

“I love going to Prides everywhere, but NYC Pride is always my favorite,” Manila explained. “NYC is my home, and it’s so amazing to ride down the parade route before millions of parade watchers! This latest NYC Pride was especially awesome! I was on the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) float with Lisa Lampanelli.

But Manila’s favourite place to perform…

“On stage… or on someone’s lap!” Manila cheekily replied.

Coming up this Friday, October 5, Manila will be making a second appearance in Vancouver as she returns for TFD Presents ICON at Post Modern nightclub in Gastown. Tickets are currently on sale for $20 at Priape and Little Sisters.

“I am super exited to come back because the last time I was [in Vancouver], was last summer Pride,” Manila said. “I has such a fun time and the city is so cool!”

UPDATE:

On Monday, October 1, 2012, Manila suddenly and unexpectedly lost her partner, Saraha Davenport. Manila will not be coming to Vancouver as originally planned, however two other contestants from RuPauls drag race, Carmen Carrera & Jiggly Calliente, will be coming in her place. If you have tickets they are still valid and will be honored for the Friday night event.

Event promoter, TFD Presents, announced this night shall also celebrate the life of Sahara’s, and her hit, Pump With Me!, will be played in her honour.

Barefoot Davie Street Dance Party 2012 [photos]

Vancouver Pride weekend officially kicked off on Friday, August 3, 2012 with the largest block party in downtown Vancouver – the Barefoot Davie Street Dance Party. While the event got off to an unusually slow start, by the time sunset came, the massive block party was just heating up.

The Davie Street Party had a new format for 2012. No longer were there two main entrances, but just one at the corner of Davie and Broughton, which added to the confusion of how to get into the gated street party. Additionally, new for 2012 were advance tickets, as opposed to the previous years Fast Track and General Admission passes. While the new ticketing and entry system had it’s challenges, organizers tried their best to keep things orderly.

The entertainment was spread out over multiple blocks. The cash-only event had beer, wine and cooler tickets available in each zone for the designated drinking areas. Police and security were on-duty to ensure liquor did not leave the gated areas.

As with previous years, the stages has live performances and featured local DJ’s and artists. Many event goers celebrated the kick-off weekend with colourful costumes, hip summer fashions and leather fetish gear.
